Sports Therapy

Sports Therapy is the foundation of what we offer. It includes a variety of treatments and offerings to tailor services to your needs

What is sports therapy

Sports therapy is a diverse practice that works to identify and diagnose sporting and general injuries and using a variety of methods gets you back on track.

Its Not just Sports massage

Although sports massage is a technique that is frequently used within a treatment it is not all we can offer or provide. Within a sports therapy session you can expect to….

Have an understanding of what is causing your pain and discomfort

A plan of what treatments will be used and why to get you back to what you love

Exercises or supplementary work to be used at home after the appointment

As a graduate sports therapist, I have a deep understanding of the musculoskeletal aspects of the body and how best to treat them. Alongside this being a member of the Sports Therapy association I complete continued professional development to keep me up to date.

What treatments are available

Sports massage

Sports massage is a deep form of soft tissue mobilisation. A sports massage can be applied in a sporting and non-sporting context. Sports massage involves a wide range of techniques that include effleurage and trigger pointing.

Mobilisations

Not to be confused with manipulations, mobilisations allow for a gradual improvement in your range of motion using pulses at varying intensity and rhythm just beyond point of resistance but before pain. These however are not just fantastic for Range of motion but also ease of motion due to secretions of synovial fluid (lubrication of the joint) and a blocking/reduction of pain due to the way pain and movement signals are transmitted.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a technique similar to acupuncture. However instead of using the meridian line and energy pathways this uses needles inserted directly into the area of injury or tension. Within an injury site the needles cause a micro trauma which triggers the bodies natural healing response or when applied into a trigger point (an area with higher electro-muscular activity) can help short the system and reduce tension and restore regular function.

Rock blades

An instrument assisted soft tissue technique which helps to mobilise the muscle and the facia (the surrounding of the muscle) and aim to improve the mobility and reduce friction between the structures leaving you feeling freer without the increased pressure of massage.

Dry Cupping

This is another technique that works with the interface between the muscle and the fascia, this time by lifting the skin using a vacuum cup. Unlike most treatments cupping works with a decompression and can be applied in many ways. This can be an excellent alternative to massage or something used as a combination with the other modalities above.

Kinesiology taping and strapping

Kinesiology taping can be used to add support or due to its unique glue pattern lift the skin to improve blood flow and the applications can be tailored to your needs. Due to its longevity this taping can last up to 5 days and allow for a longer treatment response.

Traditional taping can be used prior to sport or activity to act as a brace to allow you to compete in the short term.
